Humbled Beginnings
Knowledge Bennett
In Humbled Beginnings, Knowledge Bennett brings the metaphysical concerns of his Black Paintings into the architecture of lived experience. The brick wall becomes a record of endurance, familial care, and the courage required to move beyond one’s point of departure.
Two works, Bldg C. Apt. 10 and Bldg G. Apt. 10, take their titles from his childhood safe havens: his immediate family’s home and his grandmother’s apartment. Set within the socioeconomic conditions of public housing, these homes held a richness that material circumstances alone could not measure. They provided nourishment, protection, and space to imagine a life beyond what was immediately visible.
The series locates humility within the experience of beginning with limited means, where aspiration develops alongside an awareness of constraint. Each brick represents a step, an encounter, or a lesson. Together, they embody the tenacity through which possibility becomes structure, while preserving the bonds, shared struggles, and loves that make growth possible. There are no shortcuts through this construction, no stages of becoming that can be left unlived.
Within Bennett’s broader practice, blackness holds the potential for renewal and emergence. Here, that potential takes the form of a life built through persistence. The works extend beyond childhood to encompass the vulnerability of any new undertaking: entering unfamiliar territory, accepting uncertainty, and finding the resolve to continue.
Humbled Beginnings understands triumph as the sustained courage to exceed the limits of one’s circumstances while carrying forward the foundations that made the journey possible.
