Numbers Don't Lie

2021

Created during Knowledge Bennett’s 2021 artist residency at Kean University, Numbers Don’t Lie translates language into numerical code. Across three 60-by-60-inch canvases, sequences corresponding to letters of the alphabet reveal three questions: If Not Now, When? If Not Here, Where? If Not You, Who?

Conceived as a reminder to students, the triptych confronts procrastination and the impulse to defer responsibility. Deciphering its message requires participation, turning the encounter into an act of interpretation and self-inquiry.

Matte black acrylic and black diamond dust extend the material language of The Black Paintings. As light reveals and conceals the numerical sequences, the work connects perception with accountability. Its questions ask the viewer to recognize the moment, the place, and their own capacity to act.
